Correct Installation
Proper rack installation
is critical for protecting your bicycle, your car, and others on
the highway. Make sure you read all the directions, check your installation,
and check it again while in use. If it doesn't "seem right",
it's probably not, so look closely to see what's amiss. If it's
a trunk rack, make sure the hooks are properly secured to the correct
locations on the vehicle and make sure the straps are tight. Some
rack installations will allow you to open the trunk while the rack
is on - others won't. It all depends on the make of the vehicle.
Almost no trunks can be opened while there are bicycles on the rack
- so make sure you pack (or unpack) the trunk before you do the
rack bit!
If it's a hitch rack,
make sure the hitch bolt is tight in the receiver and the safety
pin is secure. Make sure the rack arms are set correctly and are
tight. Remember that you probably can't open the trunk or tailgate
if there is a bike on the rack as most racks won't fold down with
a bike on them.
Make sure you mount the
bicycle(s) correctly. If there is more than one bike on the rack,
make sure the chain side of the bikes are away from each other as
this will protect your gears from banging into another bike and
getting bent while you're driving down the road. Make sure the bike(s)
are secured to the rack with bungie cords and/or straps. You don't
want the bike(s) swaying back and forth as you stop and go in traffic.
Remove objects like pumps,
bags, baby seats, computers, lights, etc. for long trips as they
can get broken, knocked out of adjustment, get rained on, or just
plain disappear. Sometimes you need to raise or lower a seat to
gain clearance for another bike. If so, make sure to mark the seatpost
with tape or a marker so you remember where to set the seat height
when you get to your destination.
If it's been a while
since you mounted yours or you're unsure if you've done it correctly
- then stop by the store. We've installed thousands of racks over
the years and will be happy to look yours over. It's best to come
in the vehicle you want to use so we can check out the whole package.
We'll also tell you if your rack is safe.. Some older ones (and
some cheapo ones) just aren't worth taking a chance on. Having a
bike fall off the back of your car at high speed on the Interstate
is not something you want to experience!
